Jacob A. Mahler, Dancing Master, began calling dances at age 11 and took over his father's dance academy in St Louis at age 17. He spent many summers as the dance master in Saratoga, NY and with his wife made annual trips from St. Louis to dance capitals in Europe. His Mahler Ballroom, built in 1907, has recently been restored to its original elegance and is again a dance center in St. Louis. His booklet, Original Cotillion Figures, is his selection of dance games, called "cotillions" in the late 19th century, collected during his travels. He chose those he felt would add an element of fun and delight to assemblies and other dance events.
