What if you were to awaken one morning to find the bridge that connects your isolated town to the rest of the world has gone missing? "...simply vanished in the night!" That is the dilemma facing the people of Peach Blossom Village and the 'mystery' of Dragon Bridge. How the villagers investigate their missing bridge, and the astounding solution they find, is the wonderful surprise that lies at the core of the story. This slim volume is unique among children's picture books: the mystery is engaging enough to draw in adults as well as younger readers, and the artwork is both sophisticated and playful. This original story by Chinese-American author Ann Howard somehow feels like an age-old folktale. The setting is a fantasy locale that looks like ancient China, although there is no indication of geographical place or time frame. Howard also does a wonderful job of presenting many of the story's details through her beautiful watercolor illustrations. And did I say there was a dragon in there somewhere? Yes, absolutely. It not only mugs for readers from the cover, but also plays a dual role in the fable as being both the mystery and the solution. No spoilers here. You will have to dig into the book yourself. The subtitle, "A Peach Blossom Village Story," suggests we will have more from first-time author and illustrator, Ann Howard. I certainly hope so.
