Review of How the sun's rays will give you, health and beauty by William J. Fielding #1556.

CITATION: Fielding, W J. (1930). How the sun's rays will give you health and beauty. (Little Blue Book Number 1556). Girard, Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Company.

Reviewer: Dr W. P. Palmer.

William J. Fielding was amongst the most popular authors in the Emanuel Haldeman-Julius team of authors who wrote about 2200 Little Blue Books and 1000 Big Blue Books between 1919 and 1951. Fielding’s success as a Little Blue Book author was due to the fact that his main topics were human reproduction and human sexuality and books in this series sold for only five cents each; his own titles sold many millions of copies.

His book ‘How the sun's rays will give you health and beauty’ was not a big seller, yet sold moderately well. This Little Blue Book is only 32 pages long and it is an original 1930 edition being reviewed. The main problem with this particular book is not Fielding’s encouragement of people to enjoy an outdoor life style. That aspect of his views is medically supported today, though with many more caveats about direct exposure to sunlight. In Fielding’s view, exposure to sunlight was a good thing and the more exposure the better. That view cannot be supported, so the book is useful only as an historical essay rather than practical advice.

Fielding also thought that radioactivity and x-rays promoted health without limits to the duration and the dose applied. In places, he is incorrect in terms of the knowledge available in 1930 about the nature of radioactivity and is certainly frequently incorrect in terms of today’s knowledge. The book has little use today but is of interest to specialists and collectors.
