Five Minute Tales: More stories to read and tell when time is short by Margaret Read MacDonald is an extension of her Three Minute Tales since these were the stories just a little to long to fit in three minutes. This is also a collection of short multicultural stories arranged in themes such as the following: There are participation tales from Brazil, the United States, Thailand and various individuals. There are animal tales Mexico, Laos, Texas and Mayan and Native-American traditions. There are origin stories from Canada, the Republic of Georgia, Thailand and Laos. There are tiny tales ancient Samaria, the Republic of Georgia, Laos and the Eskimo and Basque traditions. There are riddle tales from Laos, Latvia, Thailand and the United States. There are romances from Paraguay and Indonesia. There are strange and stranger tales Korea, Zambia, Thailand, Mexico and Brazil. There are trickery tales from Hungary, Japan and African-American and Jewish folklore. There are lessons to be learned tales from India, Egypt, China, Missouri and the Ukraine. My students told a number of the short stories from China during our Chinese New Year celebration. This is a great book useful to teachers, librarians and parents. A really cool selection of stories! The participation tales are totally aimed at young elementary students but could be used with middle school and high school students to introduce storytelling and having them interact with younger kids. The hints, tips, ideas for gestures, ect. are really helpfull. The rest of the stories would be great ways to open up geography units about different areas of the world. This volume seems to have a preponderance of tales from Laos. -

I enjoyed reading the stories, and I think they would be good ones to tell when you're trying to kill a few minutes somewhere or (in some cases) need a bedtime story. Some would be easier to memorize than others, however. But I can attest that the Monkeys in the Rain story--I call it the Brazilian monkey story--works very well for use in a library story time!
