出版社によるあらすじ
"Tender and magical." - Kirkus Reviews"As much a thoughtful study of human care and relationships as it is a fairy tale." - The Horn Book"Bailey deftly explores bullying and the definition of 'normal.' This polished, charming story is a perfect fit for fans of Shannon Hale and Jessica Day George's fairy-tale retellings as well as an excellent choice for elementary school book discussion groups." - School Library Journal 続きを読む

The gritty reality of living in the middle ages, with its superstitions and hardships, is brought to stark reality with this book. The young protagonist goes to great lengths to protect his younger sister, who has a genetic disorder that leads to developmental delays.
The reality of the prejudice that those who are disabled experience, and the pain and frustrations experienced by those who care for them, are very realistic.
I have a problem with the end of this story. The sad reality is that these babes in the woods are not going to end up living as king and queen in fairy land, they're going to end up frozen to death in a snow bank. Perhaps that is the real end of the story?
If the author really does mean that they end up in fairy land then there is a problem. Magic is all well and good as long as it isn't used to solve problems with a wish fulfillment fantasy. This kind of ending cheats readers and protagonists of the conclusion they fought for. Yes, everyone needs help, but sometimes life sucks, and the only thing that will save you is hard work and grit. Better yet, perhaps a half-happy ending, where the boy realizes a small sense of peace, but knows that he and his sister will never quite be safe and secure.
