It seems Ruby Lu is always trying awfully hard to be helpful, useful, friendly, happy, and so very, very good. But she gets things muddled, and doesn’t always even know it. Ruby is so down to earth, anyone can relate to her, I suppose. She’s fun, and funny, because she is so real. She tells the story from her perspective, of how her cousin, Flying Duck, from China came to live with her family. Her deaf cousin. And her cousin’s parents and grandmother. At the end of the book is Ruby’s Amazing Glossary and Guide to Important Words. Here’s an example that so sounds like her: the definition for goose bumps: a radar system for detecting anything scary or dangerous or wonderful or breathtakingly beautiful. Behind the glossary is Flying Duck’s Awesome Glossary and Guide to Important Chinese Sign Language Signs (as demonstrated by Ruby). Flying Duck’s favorite word to sign? “Friend”.
