This is a book which discusses how Russian culture emerged from religion. Kollmann and Baron are not trying to prove that religion was the sole cause of the Russian culture, but provide examples of how religion helped shape the culture. The religion that is primarily spoken of is Russian Orthodox Christianity, however other religions such as Islam, Judaism and the pagan traditions of the country folk. The book focuses on a “then and now” organization, providing past views on a subject in comparison to the current, providing a historical view. There are a few graphic representations in this book such as maps and pictures to help the reader visualize the material. Each chapter is written by different authors however, notes are provided at the end of each chapter for detailed explanations of terms and phrases making easier for non-Russian readers.
