I greatly enjoyed reading this autobiographical fiction novel about a young man who suffers head trauma and while recovering becomes involved in rebuilding and racing classic muscle cars. The setting is the USA during the turbulent 1970's with descriptions covering anti-war protests of the Vietnam War and other counter-culture themes. It gives insight into the recovery process, both from head trauma and alcohol addiction. This is a coming of age novel and the main character faces many challenges including finding a mate, establishing independence from parents and furthering education/career goals. There is lots of action with auto racing and teen romance and I feel I learned a good bit of history and politics of the USA too.
