What is the story about?
The book tells the story of Miss Wire, an old woman living at the elderly's Home. she is 95 years old, but have the stamina of a 5yo. Miss Wire had a small bird (which will be very important for the story) and she wanted to celebrate Christmas. Unfortunately for her, the other elderly didn't belive in Christmas anymore and they didn't have the same energy that she had. They mainly wanted to sleep and they would sleep anywhere.
It was when Miss Wire decide to write a letter to Father Christmas and tell him her story. She sends her bird with her letter to the North Pole, so all the elderly can have a nice Christmas.
It was Christmas eve and Santa and his dear were already very tired, but luckly three Christmas rat rang Father Christmas at the exact moment when he was reading Miss Wire's letter. They offer their help, but Santa says there are no more gifts left. The only thing he could think of were the unwanted gifts and the three rats decided they will run around to find them and take them to the elderly's Home. They than go everywhere and collect all the unwanted presents they can, from porcelain dolls to swords. They send all the presents flying in ballons to the Home and when the elderlies woke up they had a nice surprise.
What do I think about it?
I like the story, the illustrations and the fact that the book is divided by chapter, introducing young children to chapter books. It has 5 chapters in total and they are short enough for children to read, understand and enjoy the story.
I think the book rise awareness about dangerous toys to young children. The idea that old people may have their limitations, but inside of each of them there is a child waiting to be invited to play is beautiful.
In my opinion the book has a great and strong story with beautiful illustrations.
Any other information?
Book divided by chapters. Pages are numbered with a total of 46 pages. Almost all the pages with illustration has some illustration. Only one page with Father Christmas on it has no text at all.
Some tips at the last page of the book for beginner's readers and the author Ian Whybrow and the Illustrator Ema chichester Clark comment on the book.
Good for children who can read the book by themselves, when parents want to introduce them to chapter books.
