This is an absolutely innovative, interesting paper. Never before any effects of synthetic surfactants, especially non-ionic surfactants, were studied on marine cyanobacteria.
The authors discovered a series on unique facts. The non-ionic (=non-ionogenic) surfactant, namely Triton X-100, inhibited some of strains of marine cyanobacteria from the unique collection at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (MA, U.S.A.), a world-famous scientific institution.
Moreover, low concentrations of the non-ionic surfactant, vice versa, stimulated the growth of some of the strains of cyanobacteria.
Both types of effects demonstrated a new environmental hazard from the surfactant as prospective pollutant. Any type of imbalance in the state of populations of phytoplankton is a bad thing.

This paper is excellent, useful to all who are interested in new types of ocean pollution, in ecology of marien cyanobacteria, and ecotoxicology. The paper is well worth citation.

Abstract
The non-ionogenic surfactant Triton X-100 acted differently on cyanobacteria Synechococcus WH 7805 and WH 8103: 5 mg/liter of the surfactant inhibited strain 7805 and favored the development of strain 8103. A lower concentration (0.5 mg/liter) stimulated the growth of both strains. Triton X-100 produced no effect on the motility of strain 8103 cells.
