A Pivotal Passage in the Cultural History of European early 1960s

Romagnoni's unique ... more » appropriation and montage of mass-media photographs, and their pictorial re-elaboration into complex visual "stories" is interpreted by Bedarida in relation to the Phenomenology revival of those years (in particular Wittgenstein) and to sociology and theory of mass communication such as Vance Packard's The Hidden Persuaders (1957). The volume chronicles Romagnoni's participation to the Italian cultural debate, from the discourse of Nuova Figurazione to the reception of British and American Pop Art, and his human and intellectual relationship with Italian art critics -- in particular with Enrico Crispolti, the correspondence with whom is published in the book. But it also analyzes the artist's participation to international exhibitions: his solo show at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (1962), and his participation to the Venice Biennale of 1962 and to 1964 Documenta in Kassel.
The study finally attributes the oblivion of such main episode of Italy's early 1960s to Romagnoni's untimely death at the age of 34, to the peculiar incapacity of Italian art galleries and museums to promote their artists, and, above all, to the fact that his demise happened just before the notorious Biennale of 1964 and his heritage was erased by the following debate on American cultural colonialism.
The book demonstrates how a monograph can simultaneously re-discover figures that are excluded from the canons of art history but also contribute to the knowledge and understanding of overlooked passages in cultural history.
